About "You're Hired. Now What?" An Immigrant's Guide to Success in the Canadian Workplace

Dear Lynda,

I've just finished reading your book and I thought it would be appropriate to send you a thank you or appreciation note. I'm a Professional Land Surveyor from Argentina, I moved to Edmonton six years ago. Before moving I was in contact with the company that hired me and still work for (Altus Geomatics) so I was lucky to avoid the job search process after arriving. However, the adaptation process for my family and myself was not easy. I took some conversation courses and looked for resources that may help me, but I found that all was aimed to get a job, as if that was the final goal. I remember many people telling me things like you were hired, you are working in your career, what else do you want?

My work is very technical, I did OK in the technical matters but it was hard to learn the workplace and social skills, to gain confidence and do not get stuck in one position. Your book could help many people to fill that gap.

When I was reading it I was able to confirm many things that I learned through experience and guessing during years in the office, and learned about many others and new resources such as Toastmasters and LinkedIn (I'm trying both). Right now I'm working in the field as part of my Alberta license requirements. My field work is mostly in the oil patch, which adds even more diversity to the mix. I found no book like yours about that work environment so it has been about trial and error again !...

I'm looking forward to go back to the office, when I got my license, as a project manager. "You're hired now what? " will be definitely in my office bookcase.

Sincerely,
Hector Muniz

You’re Hired. Now What?” helped me see some behaviors in a new light. I never realized the root causes of someone not making eye contact or not smiling in a business setting, and thought some people were not engaged in the conversation or not showing initiative. Now I see these behaviors from a cultural viewpoint. This book is a good guide for every employee, and employer, no matter where you come from.
